Why Instagram keeps cropping your cover text

You design a Reel cover at 9:16 — 1080×1920. That full frame is what plays in the Reels feed. But your profile grid shows a shorter, tighter crop of the same image, and anything near the top or bottom edge simply falls outside it.

01

Roughly 12.7% each side

In practice, the profile grid trims roughly 12.7% from the top and 12.7% from the bottom of a 9:16 cover.

02

About 244px on a 1080×1920

12.7% of 1920 is roughly 244 pixels. That is a lot of headline. Keep the words that matter inside the clear middle band.

03

Watch the lower-left

Instagram draws a view-count badge near the bottom-left of Reel thumbnails. Text there competes with it even when it survives the crop.

A fair caveat: Instagram does not publish an official safe-area spec, and the exact crop shifts between app versions, devices and layouts. The 12.7% figure is a practical, widely-used approximation — treat the overlay as a strong guide, not a guarantee. This tool bakes the safe-area math into the layout: the label block sits at x = 80 with its final line resting on y = 1452, and the series tag's cap line starts at y = 320 — all comfortably inside the middle band.
Your images stay on your device. This tool processes everything locally in your browser and never uploads your photo to a server. There is no backend, no database and no account. HEIC files are converted in the browser too. Close the tab and nothing is left behind.
